AstraZeneca’s Brilinta recommended in draft NICE guidance

15th August 2016

AstraZeneca ticagrelor-based anti-clotting drug Brilinta has been recommended in new draft guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

The UK regulator is provisionally recommending a 60 mg dose of the therapy taken twice a day for up to three years among people who have had a heart attack at least 12 months ago and who remain at high risk of having a further heart attack or stroke.

This lower-dose option is being endorsed for use beyond the initial 12-month period as a continuation of their previous ticagrelor treatment, with no interruption between the higher 90 mg dose and the reduced 60 mg regimen.

Brilinta is backed by a body of clinical evidence showing it can offer benefits for patients in this situation, helping to reduce the fear of heart attack recurrence that can have a serious negative impact on a person's quality of life.

Professor Carole Longson, NICE's health technology evaluation centre director, said: "In provisionally recommending ticagrelor, we are pleased to be able to increase the treatment options available to the many thousands of people who stand to benefit from it."
