Autumn Statement met with criticism from healthcare bodies

The government's Autumn Statement has been met with criticism from a number of organisations representing the healthcare sector.

Speaking on behalf of NHS doctors, the British Medical Association (BMA) has hit out at chancellor Philip Hammond for failing to pledge extra cash for the NHS, as well as for repeating what the BMA sees as a misleading claim that the NHS budget has been boosted by ten billion pounds.

BMA council chair Mark Porter said the Autumn Statement essentially ignored "repeated calls from the health sector for much-needed additional funding".

Thinktank The King's Fund agreed with this view, with director of policy Richard Murray saying that without a new commitment of funding, the "already intense pressures on services will continue to grow".

Meanwhile, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) said the government has missed an opportunity to address years of pay restraint in the nursing sector that has contributed to significant underfunding problems.

RCN chief executive and general secretary Janet Davies said this could result in a serious recruitment crisis in the coming years if action is not taken soon.
