B Braun launches drug delivery system for antibiotic
B Braun, the medical equipment supplier, has released what it terms as the only premium intravenous drug delivery system for the antibiotic cefoxitin in the US.
Entitled Duplex, the device is an enclosed system designed to provide sterility and accuracy. It can store drugs in different compartments separated by quick-release seals, while removing the possibility that the dilutant is delivered without the drug.
It also has computer support that uses a barcode system to prevent errors and improve administration of drug inventories.
Rick Williamson, B Braun’s director of marketing, said that the “simple and easy-to-use” design would provide the “highest standard of care” for cefoxitin users – a “critical” antibiotic.
He stated: “Duplex reduces the potential for medication dosing errors with a unique barcode technology that references final admixture, can be used to automate patient charting, and is designed to fit into medication dispensing systems to track inventory and facilitate reimbursement.”
Duplex has evolved to be able to deliver a range of multi-generation cephalosporin antibiotics, including cefazolin and ceftriaxone.
B Braun, a German company, achieved a turnover of over three billion euros (2.07 billion pounds) in 2005. It employs over 27,000 employees, including several at its UK headquarters in Thorncliffe Park, Sheffield.
