Bausch and Lomb launches eye vitamin supplement

At the annual congress of the American Optometric Association (AOA) last week, Bausch & Lomb announced the launch of its Ocuvite DF eye vitamin supplement – a product aimed at helping diabetics maintain good eye health.

The product contains genistein, an antioxidant that reduces oxidative and attacks free radicals in conjunction with other antioxidants and nutrients, including alpha-lipoic acid.

Bausch & Lomb also presented a number of other products at the AOA meeting, including the Renue MultiPlus Travel Kit that meets hand-baggage limits from transport authorities, upgraded PureVision contact lenses with 28 per cent lower modulus with enhanced comfort and the Alaway (ketotifen fumarate ophthalmic solution antihistamine), over-the-counter eye drops for the relief of the symptoms of allergies.

Anthony Cavallerano, an optometrist at the VA Boston Health Care System, said: “Mounting scientific evidence suggests that nutritional supplements may be important in protecting general eye health by addressing the shortfalls in Americans’ nutritional intake, especially when the supplements are a part of a balanced, healthy diet.”

He added that the launch of Ocuvite DF is well-received entrant to the market to further this end.

Bausch & Lomb also presented three posters at the annual congress: PureVision Toric Lenses Piggybacked with Nike MAXSIGHT Amber and Grey-Green Sport Contact Lenses; Rate of Disinfection Efficacy of Multi-Purpose Contact Lens Care Solutions; and Visual Outcomes Associated with Aspheric and Non-Aspheric Silicone Hydrogel Lenses.

Last December, the company announced the results of a clinical evaluation of patients showing that individuals with lenses for an astigmatism exhibited better vision following a refit with PureVision Toric lenses.
