Bavarian Nordic Secures 4-Year UK Mpox Vaccine Supply Deal
Bavarian Nordic has secured a four-year UK supply contract with the UK Health Security Agency for MVA-BN, its non-replicating smallpox and mpox vaccine marketed in the UK as Imvanex. Reported on 3 November 2026, the deal includes scheduled shipments and optional flexibility provisions, reinforcing UK public health preparedness capacity and extending Bavarian Nordic’s long-standing UK government procurement relationship across stockpile and outbreak response contracts.
MVA-BN is a non-replicating vaccine approved from age two in people considered at risk of smallpox or mpox infection. It was originally developed with the US Government as a smallpox vaccine for the whole population, including immunocompromised people not recommended for traditional replicating smallpox vaccines. The vaccine is marketed under three brands across major regulated markets: Jynneos in the US and Mexico, Imvamune in Canada, and Imvanex in the EU/EEA and UK. MVA-BN is also approved in Singapore and Switzerland. Hitesh Sahni, Senior Vice-President of Public Preparedness at Bavarian Nordic, framed the UK contract around the importance of sustainable vaccine stockpiles and rapid response capabilities to public health.
The four-year term provides commercial visibility and supports Bavarian Nordic’s continuing role as a major UK biosecurity supplier, building on earlier UK procurements aimed at strengthening national preparedness, ensuring vaccine availability for eligible groups and supporting outbreak response. Financial terms were not disclosed. The deal arrives against a backdrop of ongoing WHO-declared mpox public health emergency risk assessments and clade I outbreaks across central and east Africa, with UK Health Security Agency continuing to maintain stockpile capacity for both routine high-risk group vaccination and rapid outbreak surge response. The contract also complements Bavarian Nordic’s broader vaccine portfolio growth, which included a March 2026 manufacturing agreement with Serum Institute of India for its chikungunya vaccine (CHIKV VLP), extending the company’s commercial reach across the growing public health vaccine category.
The commercial signal is a continued expansion of long-term UK biosecurity vaccine procurement contracts, with four-year supply terms providing manufacturer revenue visibility against sustained mpox outbreak preparedness demand. Government stockpile contracts remain an important commercial anchor for public health-focused vaccine developers. Expect sustained UK investment in mpox and smallpox preparedness and continued Bavarian Nordic commercial momentum through 2027 and 2028.
