Baxter reports positive data from trial of fibrin sealant Artiss

12th April 2011

Baxter has published new clinical data that demonstrates the benefits of its fibrin sealant product Artiss when used in facial surgery procedures.

The agent has had its safety and efficacy evaluated in a phase III study conducted among 75 patients, during which Artiss was applied with sutures in order to improve the adherence of skin flaps at the edge of the face.

When the sealant was used, patients were shown to experience reduced levels of post-operative drainage volumes on both sides of the face, compared to the current standard of care.

Dr Steve Zvi Abrams, medical director for Baxter's bioscience business, said: "Within the reconstructive and cosmetic plastic surgeon community, there is considerable interest in products that may be able to aid in tissue adherence."

These results will now be submitted to regulators in the US in the hope of supporting a licence extension for the product.

Last month, the company was granted approval from a European healthcare regulator for Preflucel, its new vaccine for seasonal influenza.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800496067-ADNFCR
