Bayer and Evotec to develop new kidney disease therapies
Bayer has announced a new partnership with Evotec to develop multiple clinical candidates for the treatment of kidney diseases.
The five-year, multi-target research collaboration aims to find new ways of treating conditions such as chronic kidney disease in diabetes patients, with both companies to contribute novel drug targets and a comprehensive set of high-quality technology platforms.
Responsibilities during pre-clinical development of potential clinical candidates will be shared by the partners, with Bayer receiving exclusive access to selected candidates, as well as to Evotec's CureNephron target pipeline.
Bayer will be responsible for any subsequent clinical development and commercialisation, while Evotec will receive a minimum of 14 million euros (12.07 million pounds) over the contract period in research payments and licence fees, plus preclinical, clinical and sales-dependent fees of potentially over 300 million euros.
The two companies are already in the fourth year of a five-year partnership in the therapeutic area of endometriosis, with the alliance having delivered four preclinical candidates and one first-in-class clinical programme.
Professor Andreas Busch, member of the executive committee of Bayer's pharmaceuticals division and head of drug discovery, said: "Evotec is already a strong partner of ours, and we look forward to continuing the relationship to develop novel drug candidates for the benefit of patients."
