Bayer awarded prize for Care-O-Bot 3 project

Bayer has been awarded the Polyurethanes 2008 prize for its Care-O-Bot 3 project, it has been announced.

The company, together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Engineering and Automation, was recognised by the Association for Foamed Plastics and Polyurethanes for its home service robot.

Care-O-Bot 3, which was conceived by the Fraunhofer Institute, includes an elastic polyurethane skin on its external moving parts developed by Bayer MaterialScience.

Flexible polyurethane foams expert Manfred Naujoks, who accepted the award on behalf of Bayer, explained the material is "an intelligent combination" of polyurethane dispersion frothed and flexible foams.

"It is a completely novel, innovative class of material which, above all else, has great potential for use in the future robotics market," he added.
