Bayer HealthCare study shows low GP awareness of HMB treatment pathways

Bayer HealthCare has published the findings of a recent study that shows UK GPs lack awareness of the available treatment options for heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB).

The survey of 250 GPs showed that as many as 70 percent of doctors are unaware of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines on HMB treatment, or are unfamiliar with the details.

Indeed, only three percent said they routinely prescribe the recommended levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) as a first-line treatment for this condition, with most prescribing tranexamic acid or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs instead.

The study also revealed that 19 percent of GPs believe that the LNG-IUS is unsuitable for younger women or those without children, despite research confirming this is not the case.

Janesh Gupta, professor of obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of Birmingham, said: "HMB is a common condition that can have a profound impact on patients' lives, so it is important that the most effective treatment is given as early as possible."

Bayer is responsible for the distribution of a number of LNG-IUS products in the UK, including the Jaydess and Mirena brands.
