Bayer launches veterinary guide to diagnosing antimicrobial infections

Bayer has announced the launch of a new veterinary guide to diagnosing antimicrobial infections as part of its Education Now, Safeguarding Antimicrobials initiative.

Titled Diagnosing Infections, the guide is available to download and outlines the correct diagnostic process for antimicrobial infections, including the different techniques available, tips on performing these appropriately and advice on interpreting test results effectively.

Simon Tappin, a specialist in veterinary internal medicine at Dick White Referrals, allied with Idexx Laboratories' microbiology manager Matt Jones and veterinary dermatology specialist Ross Bond to produce the guide.

Recent surveys have shown that antimicrobials are prescribed in up to 48 percent of dog and cat consultations and generally play a vital role in the day-to-day running of small animal practices. 

However, 63 percent of vets said they would like to improve their knowledge on this important subject, while 90 percent have voiced concerns about the threat of antimicrobial resistance.

Hannah Watts, group product manager at Bayer, said: "The Diagnosing Infections guide has been developed in response to the recent polls amongst UK practicing vets, and is aimed to help support vets in making optimal decisions when it comes to prescribing antimicrobials."
