Bayer Schering Pharma begins riociguat trials

Bayer Schering Pharma is to begin phase III trials of its oral agent riociguat, which is a potential treatment for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary arterial hypertension.

The company announced today that two studies will involve more than 700 patients and investigate the safety and efficacy off the drug.

Riociguat is described by Bayer Schering Pharma as a stimulant of the enxyme soluble guanylate cyclise – and one that represents a “new class of therapeutics”, the firm said in a statement.

Head of global clinical development for cardiovascular diseases at the company Dr Frank Misselwitz added: “Riociguat has the potential to overcome the disadvantages of current standard therapies.

“With the two trials … we are stepping up our commitment.”

He also said riociguat was one of the “most promising” treatment options being developed in the cardiology field by Bayer Schering Pharma.

Meanwhile, last week saw Bayer Diabetes Care unveil new coloured Microlet devices, which can help to remind those with the condition when they need to change lancets.
