Bayer Schering Pharma launches new contraception

Bayer Schering Pharma is rolling out a product to give women a new contraception option.

Qlaira (estradiol valerate/dienogest) is the first of its kind to deliver a type of oestrogen that is identical to the one produced by ovaries.

To provide reliable birth control and manage the monthly cycle, the delivery regimen releases hormones at suitable levels at relevant times.

It is also the first contraception to be developed and approved to treat heavy and/or prolonged menstrual bleeding in those without organic pathology.

Dr Phil Smits is the head of women’s healthcare at the company and said the firm is delighted to launch the innovative birth control across the continent.

“We are committed to developing new products and improving on the existing range in order to better serve women and their contraceptive needs,” he said.

From tomorrow (May 15th), Qlaira will be available in Germany and several other European countries.

Last month, the business began phase III trials of a contraception patch for women that combines low-dosed ethinylestradiol and gestodene.
