Bayer Schering Pharma submits endometriosis treatment

Bayer Schering Pharma (BSP) has announced that its new endometriosis treatment has been submitted for registration.

The company has put forward its Visanne drug for consideration by all member states of the European community – with the Netherlands serving as the reference member nation for marketing authorisation.

Visanne has previously been tested for its efficacy and tolerability in the treatment of endometriosis across a number of clinical studies, with initial results presented to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine last year.

The drug seeks to address the issues related to current treatments that only allow the short-term relief of symptoms associated with the condition.

Commenting on the news that Visanne has now moved into its registration phase, BSP’s head of business for women’s healthcare Dr Phil Smits said there was a great need for the product in the global gynaecological market.

“With the submission of Visanne we have reached another important strategic milestone in the development of innovative gynaecological products geared towards improving women’s health,” he added.

This week also saw BSP announce the signing of a licensing agreement with Hamamatsu Photonics that will see further research into the development and commercialisation of cancer treatments.
