BD and JDRF to develop glucose monitoring technology

8th June 2012

BD has announced a new collaboration with diabetes research organisation JDRF and the Helmsley Charitable Trust, which will focus on the advancement of glucose monitoring devices.

This extension of the organisations' existing type 1 diabetes collaboration will aim to accelerate the development of BD's proprietary glucose-sensing technology, which has shown promise in terms of the accuracy and reliability it provides.

It is hoped that by progressing this technology, it can be used as a foundation point for next-generation systems that could be utilised in the development of fully automated artificial pancreases.

JDRF research has already shown that continuous glucose monitoring can significantly improve diabetes control, while decreasing the frequency of blood glucose level fluctuations.

Linda Tharby, president for diabetes care at BD Medical, said: "This latest collaboration with JDRF and the Helmsley Charitable Trust demonstrates the parties' commitment to further improving the patient experience and enabling the artificial pancreas."

This comes after JDRF and the Helmsley Charitable Trust announced a similar alliance with fellow medical technology firm Medtronic earlier this week.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801380580-ADNFCR
