Beiersdorf hails Nobel Prize win for key cooperation partner

Beiersdorf has offered its congratulations to one of its key scientific cooperation partners after he was awarded the prestigious Nobel Prize for chemistry.

Dr Stefan Hell, director of the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Gottingen, has won the world-renowned accolade for his groundbreaking invention of STED microscopy, working alongside Eric Betzig and William Moerner.

Beiersdorf has been working with Dr Hell and Leica Microsystems to utilise GSDIM widefield nanoscopy in its research, facilitating precise, detailed imaging of cells. This will help the firm to gain new insight into the processes behind skin ageing, and how cellular structures change over time.

Dr Frank Fischer, head of the Beiersdorf research microscopy lab, said: "We have been able to specifically mark structures of the cellular support frame and the substructure of connective tissue as well as the power plants of the cells, the mitochondria and to image them on living cells."

In turn, this will allow the company to develop new and innovative skincare products, leading the firm to thank Dr Hell for his contributions.

The company continued its recent profitable growth trajectory during the first half of 2014, achieving an organic growth rate of five percent.
