Beiersdorf makes statement on cancer study

Beiersdorf has made an announcement on a recent study that claimed moisturising cream may promote skin cancer in mice.

In the study mice were exposed to UVB radiation prior to being administered with Eurecrin Original Moisturising Cream, Dermabase cream, Dermovan and Vanicream.

These mice showed a higher incidence of tumours than those treated with a placebo solution.

Beiersdorf notes the authors warn these results should not be directly transposed to humans.

“Eucerin has been on the market for more than 100 years and is recommended and used by dermatologists all over the world,” the pharmacy supplier said.

It added the cream is used by individuals often under the care of physicians without such incidents being reported, while the study did not follow Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development guidelines.

Earlier this month, Beiersdorf reported an 11.5 per cent year-on-year growth in sales for the first half of 2008.
