Bio-Techne Acquires Spatial Biology Company Lunaphore

26th June 2023

Lunaphore is set to be acquired by Bio-Techne, a multinational life sciences firm that offers innovative instruments and bioactive reagents to both academic and clinical diagnostic sectors.

With the application of precision microfluidic technology, Lunaphore has positioned itself as a pioneer in the creation of fully automated spatial biology systems. These identify hyperplex proteomic and transcriptome indicators in various tissues at the single-cell and subcellular level.

The acquisition strives to establish the first ever entirely automated spatial multiomic workflow, combining the RNAscope HiPlex technology from Bio-Techne with the COMETTM instrument and SPYRETM antibody panels from Lunaphore. Together, these applications will facilitate integrated hyperplex identification of protein and RNA biomarkers at a single-cell level.

Bio-Techne’s CEO, Chuck Kummeth, explained that “Lunaphore is very complementary” to their “leading spatial biology franchise, as COMET™ delivers an automation platform for our RNAscope assays, and we leverage our global commercial team to penetrate this rapidly growing market.”

Lunaphore’s CEO, Dr. Ata Tuna Ciftlik, said that the “shared vision of tackling the translational and clinical research market, while using our complementary best-in-class spatial proteomics and transcriptomics products is going to make a great impact on our customers in advancing research.” They are now considered “the largest spatial biology player.”
