Biogen and Eisai to expand Alzheimer’s research collaboration

Biogen and Eisai have agreed to expand the scope of an existing partnership to jointly develop and commercialise new treatments for Alzheimer's disease.

Under the revised terms of the deal, Eisai has exercised its option to co-develop and co-promote aducanumab, an investigational anti-amyloid beta antibody originally created by Biogen.

Biogen will continue to lead the ongoing phase III development of aducanumab and will remain solely responsible for all development costs until April 2018, at which point the partners will divide responsibilities on a region-by-region basis.

The new-look agreement will take advantage of each company's respective geographic strengths for commercialisation, and adjusts the respective share of potential profits from potential sales of aducanumab.

Additionally, the companies will continue to jointly develop elenbecestat and BAN2401 through the collaboration, and have agreed to co-promote Biogen's multiple sclerosis treatments Avonex, Tysabri and Tecfidera in Japan.
