Biogen Idec’s Tecfidera set for further NICE review

Biogen Idec's Tecfidera has been refused recommendation from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for the treatment of adults with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) on the NHS in England and Wales.

NICE put out a draft guideline for consultation until March 12th by which time it hopes to receive a series of clarifications from Biogen Idec.

Chief executive of NICE Sir Andrew Dillon said when the independent appraisal committee were reviewing the evidence on Tecfidera, issues with clinical and cost-effectiveness for the drug for adults with RRMS were raised.

"This is why we have requested more details from the manufacturer – we want to ensure that we have as much information as possible to make an informed final recommendation," he said.

Following the decision, Nick Rijke, director of policy and research at the MS Society, said he was hopeful of NICE overturning its original decision at the next consultation.
