BMA report highlights difficulties of filling GP vacancies

The British Medical Association (BMA) has raised concerns about the growing number of GP vacancies across England, which are leading to understaffing issues.

A survey from the organisation has indicated that nearly one-third of GP partners in England have been unable to fill staff vacancies during the past 12 months, meaning the practices in question have simply had to put up with the positions remaining unfilled.

One in five said their practices had taken between three to six months to appoint staff to vacant posts, while only one in eight said they had no gaps to fill. The East and West Midlands, as well as the east of England, are the areas most affected by this problem.

This comes after another recent BMA study showed that 84 percent of GPs believe their ability to provide safe care to patients is currently being undermined by overwhelming workload levels.

BMA GP committee chair Chaand Nagpaul said: "It is deeply concerning that so many GPs are reporting that their practices effectively have permanent holes in their workforce, which they are unable to fill."
