BMS to close Panama manufacturing facility

Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) has announced that it is to close its secondary packaging facility based in Colon, Panama.

The facility’s closure is part of BMS’ strategy to optimise its supply chain, with the decision also a result of the decreased market demand for the mature products packaged at the site.

BMS has stated that the site’s closure will further enable it to focus on strategic priorities and ensure that the company continues to invest in its product range and fuel growth.

Carlo de Notaristefani, president of Technical Operation, confirmed that BMS was continuing to identify ways to operate and reduce its cost base, boost investment and develop innovative therapies.
“Focusing our manufacturing, packaging and distribution operations on fewer, specialised sites is one way we can bring greater efficiencies to our network,” he said.

The Colon facility started operations in 1959 and carries out secondary packaging operations for the company’s pharmaceutical and ostomy products.

Earlier this month, BMS has joined forces with the National Aids Fund to launch the fourth annual ‘Light to Unite’ campaign in support of World Aids Day.

Light to Unite encourages individuals to get more closely involved with the fight against the disease by sharing knowledge and experiences as well as raising funds to benefit grassroots HIV/Aids organisations throughout the US.
