Boehringer Ingelheim and China Southeast University ally on hearing loss research

29th November 2016

Boehringer Ingelheim has announced a new collaboration with China Southeast University Institute of Life Sciences on the development of new hearing loss treatments.

The joint research project aims to develop new therapeutic approaches for hearing loss through the regeneration of hair cells from inner ear stem cells, and will leverage the expertise of the university's Professor Renjie Chai, a renowned leader in this field.

Boehringer Ingelheim, meanwhile, will contribute its own expertise in drug discovery and clinical development to aid the potential development of new treatments, which are greatly needed, as there are currently no effective methods for restoring hearing loss.

Researchers from both organisations will investigate key signaling pathways and proteins involved in regeneration in the inner ear to develop a drug discovery strategy to target hair cell regeneration.

Dr Clive Wood, senior corporate vice-president for discovery research at Boehringer Ingelheim, said: "We are excited about initiating this collaboration, which is an important next step towards a new focus area for our research and development and our first human pharma research collaboration in China."

This comes as part of the company's wider Research Beyond Borders initiative, which is currently focusing on the areas of regenerative medicine, the microbiome and new technologies such as gene therapy.
