Boehringer Ingelheim and Lilly receive approval for Trajenta

Boehringer Ingelheim and Lilly have been granted European regulatory approval for Trajenta, their new treatment for type 2 diabetes.

The European Commission has approved the linagliptin-based therapy in combination with metformin and metformin plus sulphonylurea, as well as for use as a monotherapy among those unable to control their condition with metformin or lifestyle changes.

Data from clinical trials have shown that Trajenta has a favourable safety and efficacy profile and is able to reduce haemoglobin levels using only one dose, making it more convenient for patients and clinicians.

Professor Klaus Dugi, corporate senior vice-president for medicine at Boehringer Ingelheim, noted that the drug has proven durable for up to a year among a wide range of adult patients.

"We are delighted that linagliptin will soon be available to patients across Europe," he added.

Lilly and Boehringer Ingelheim announced a new collaborative partnership in January 2011 that will see them working together to develop a variety of diabetes therapies.
