Boehringer Ingelheim and Qualcomm to bring digital capabilities to Respimat inhaler

Boehringer Ingelheim has announced a new partnership with Qualcomm to develop a connectivity solution for the Respimat inhaler.

The platform inhaler for the Boehringer Ingelheim family of respiratory therapies is designed to help improve chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) treatment outcomes and will now be enhanced with a wireless, low-power, disposable module from Qualcomm.

With this addition, the inhaler will be able to seamlessly connect with Qualcomm Life's 2net Platform, allowing it to track puffs and share the collected information with healthcare providers.

The module will be developed using 2net Design, a platform for designing the communications components of connected medical devices.

Ruchin Kansal, executive director and head of business innovation at Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, said: "Boehringer Ingelheim is proud to join forces with Qualcomm Life, a global leader in wireless technologies, to bring the latest technology to our Respimat inhaler with the goal of improving adherence to daily medicines that treat symptoms of COPD."

This comes after the firm announced earlier this week that it will be allying with Saniona on the development of new therapies for the treatment of schizophrenia.
