Boehringer-Ingelheim announces positive aggrenox results

Boehringer-Ingelheim has revealed that a study into aggrenox (extended-release dipyridamole) showed that the drug is at least as effective and safe as other treatments used in those who have suffered an ischaemic stroke or transient ischaemic attack.

As part of the trial, aggrenox (extended-release dipyridamole) was administered to one group, while another received ASA (acetylsalicylic acid – aspirin).

After three months, testing showed that although there were few differences between the two treatment groups, there were numerically not as many recurrent ischaemic events in patients who received Aggrenox than those being treated with ASA.

Professor Reinhard Dengler, the coordinating investigator of the trial, said that ASA has long been accepted as the “gold standard” of early secondary prevention after an ischaemic stroke.

He added: “We now have scientifically-based experience with early administration of extended-release dipyridamole plus ASA.”

Another trial conducted by Boehringer-Ingelheim recently was that of tiotropium (Spiriva Handihaler 18 g), which found that the drug significantly COPD) of moderate severity.
