Boehringer Ingelheim completes enrolment for new Trajenta study

Boehringer Ingelheim has announced the completion of patient enrolment for Carolina, a new study assessing cardiovascular outcomes associated with its Trajenta diabetes therapy.

To be carried out in association with partner Lilly, the trial will evaluate the long-term impact of treatment with Trajenta on cardiovascular morbidity and mortality over a period of six to seven years, in comparison to glimepiride.

The study will be completed in 2018 and includes more than 6,000 patients based at over 670 sites spanning 43 countries.

Currently, the impact of diabetes treatment options on cardiovascular complications is not well understood, which causes problems in clinical decision-making.

Professor Klaus Dugi, corporate senior vice-president for medicine at Boehringer Ingelheim, said: "Carolina will close the scientific gap in our understanding of long-term cardiovascular outcomes with linagliptin and glimepiride. This study illustrates our commitment to provide a strong scientific foundation for the best treatment options."

Last week, the drug was approved by the European Commission for use in combination with insulin among adults with type 2 diabetes, expanding its range of potential uses.
