Boehringer Ingelheim confirms new data for Aptivus

Boehringer Ingelheim has confirmed that new three-year data demonstrates Aptivus (tipranavir) in combination with Norvir (ritonavir) as an effective and durable treatment option for treatment-experienced HIV patients.

Research, drawn from the Resist studies, was presented at the 11th European Aids Conference in Madrid this week.

Data showed that at 156 weeks, Aptivus combined with ritonavir continued to provide a superior and durable treatment response compared to a group of ritonavir-boosted comparator protease inhibitors.

The group of comparator inhibitors included low dose ritonavir boosted lopinavir, amprenavir, saquinavir and indinavir.

Boehringer Ingelheim reported that treatment response rates through three years of therapy were nearly three times higher with Aptivus and ritonavir compared to the comparator group.

Lead author of the study Charles Hicks described the findings as an “important achievement”.

“The new data show shows? that for patients who achieve successful HIV suppression with tipranavir, the results are usually maintained over the long term,” he said.

Earlier this month, Boehringer Ingelheim beat off a number of competitors to be named as the top employer in the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industry in a poll for Science.
