Boehringer Ingelheim examines ways to lower blood pressure

Boehringer Ingelheim has found an investigational combination of telmisartan and amlodipine can be an effective way to help people with hypertension ? who are also at risk of cardiovascular (CV) events – lower their blood pressure for 24 hours.

A range of patients ? including the elderly, obese and sufferers of type 2 diabetes ? were found to benefit from the treatment and tolerated it well.

Many individuals struggle to control their blood pressure if they use only one therapeutic agent and there is an unmet medical need for a convenient therapy for this problem.

Professor Giuseppe Mancia, professor of medicine and chairman of the department of clinical medicine, noted studies have found telmisartan can improve compliance rates.

“The new ? combination data shows that this combination is effective and well-tolerated in difficult-to-treat patients at cardiovascular risk and in patients not controlled by amlodipine alone,” he said.

In turn, this may help to improve cardiovascular disease management, Professor Mancia concluded.

Last week, Boehringer Ingelheim released data indicating that Mirapexin/Sifrol (pramipexole) could aid patients with Parkinson’s disease.
