Boehringer Ingelheim receives SmPC approval for Viramune

Boehringer Ingelheim has received approval for an update of the summary of product characteristics (SmPC) for Viramune (nevirapine) as a treatment for patients with HIV, it has announced.

The company said that the European commission’s decision came after a positive recommendation from the Committee for Medical Products for Human Use (CHMP), which is a scientific body within the European Medicines Agency.

Viramune’s SmPC has been updated to show that clinical studies have indicated the treatment has been linked to an increase in HDL cholesterol, as well as an overall improvement in the total ratio of HDL cholesterol within the body.

Dr Manfred Haehl, senior vice-president of medicine at Boehringer Ingelheim, stated that the firm is “very satisfied” with the commission’s decision to recognise the positive effects that Viramune can have.

“Physicians treating patients with HIV need to have a range of treatment options available so they can tailor the therapy to the individual patient’s need and response,” he added.

In recent days, Boehringer Ingelheim received a positive opinion from the CHMP regarding of a once daily formulation for Mirapexin/ Sifrol (pramipexole).
