Boehringer Ingelheim report shows differing priorities in lung cancer treatment

Boehringer Ingelheim has published the results of a study showing the differing approaches to treatment for advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

The survey involved 500 European physicians treating patients with advanced NSCLC, asking them about their primary therapy goal and their choice of treatment after first-line chemotherapy, with results published in the journal Clinical Lung Cancer.

It was shown that 40 percent of physicians considered extending overall survival a priority therapy goal for patients with a good performance status, while 36 percent prioritised quality of life, 19 percent cited achieving disease stability, and five percent emphasised tumour response.

Meanwhile, 36 percent of physicians considered the most important product feature to be that it offers a clinically relevant increase in overall survival, while the remainder prioritised other factors, such as progression-free survival improvements or quality of life benefits.

Generally, physician attitudes towards therapy goals for this patient group were aligned across all of the countries surveyed – France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK.
