Boehringer Ingelheim shows “superior” results for Micardis/Pritor
Boehringer Ingelheim has demonstrated new results for telmisartin, which it markets as Micardis and with GlaxoSmithKline as Pritor.
At the annual meeting of the European Society of Hypertension, Boehringer Ingelheim said that telmisartan provides “better and powerful blood pressure reduction from morning to morning” in comparison to other angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs).
Smoothness index (SI), a new measure of the magnitude and consistency of blood pressure reduction, was used to demonstrate the control on blood pressure exerted
By telmisartin in comparison to other ARBs like losartan, ramipril and amlodipine. It is designed to provide a more accurate reflection of blood pressure over time, which single readings cannot provide.
In an analysis of over 5,100 patients with mild-moderate hypertension, the SI data confirmed that telmisartin provided more effective blood pressure control over 24 hours than ramipril and was comparible to amlodipine, marketed by Pfizer as Norvasc.
Professor Philippe Gosse of Hopital Saint Andre, Bordeaux, who led the study investigations, remarked: “High blood pressure is a 24 hour condition. These studies show that a single blood pressure reading at a clinic does not offer doctors or patients a diagnostic tool sufficient to predict the long-term risks of high blood pressure.”
“These studies also highlight patients? need for treatments like telmisartan that work better for longer,” he added.
Boehringer Ingelheim claims to be one of the world’s top-20 pharmaceuitcal companies. As well as Boehringer Ingelheim, GlaxoSmithKline, Bayer and Astellas market the drug in selected countries outside the US, under the names Micardis, Pritor, Kinzalmono and Kinzalkomb.
