Boehringer Ingelheim survey shows different ways patients learn they have diabetes
Boehringer Ingelheim has announced the results of a new survey highlighting differences in the way patients are informed that they have type 2 diabetes.
The findings come from the IntroDia survey, which has been conducted by Boehringer Ingelheim, Lilly and the International Diabetes Federation, with 5,904 people with type 2 diabetes in 26 countries offering opinions about their diagnosis experience.
It was indicated that 11 percent of people did not receive their diagnosis in a face-to-face appointment with a healthcare professional, instead getting a call from their doctor, being informed by a receptionist or told via another form of communication such as an email or letter.
The most direct interactions were seen in Indonesia and South Africa, where all patients received a face-to-face diagnosis whereas only one percent of patients in the United Arab Emirates received a face-to-face diagnosis with a healthcare professional.
Research from the broader IntroDia survey previously indicated that the vast majority of physicians believe conversations at diagnosis are crucial, with the quality of communication often linked to future diabetes outcomes.
Dr Matthew Capehorn, a British primary care physician and member of the IntroDia survey advisory board, said: "Given the overwhelming evidence demonstrating how important early patient-doctor conversations are, this new information highlights that there is room for improvement at this crucial stage."
