Boston Scientific welcomes new guidelines recommending S-ICD devices

Boston Scientific has welcomed the publication of new industry guidelines affirming the benefits offered by subcutaneous implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (S-ICD) technology.

The American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology and the Heart Rhythm Society have formally recommended the use of a S-ICD devices for the treatment of patients with ventricular arrhythmias and the prevention of sudden cardiac death.

Boston Scientific's Emblem MRI S-ICD system is currently the only S-ICD on the market, as well as being the only implantable defibrillator shown to offer protection for patients at risk of sudden cardiac death without touching the heart.

Patients at high risk for infection often have limited venous access, which can result in a prolonged or failed implantation when using transvenous ICDs (TV-ICDs). A recent analysis of more than 6,400 patients showed that TV-ICDs were associated with an eightfold higher rate of lead complications than S-ICD recipients.

Dr Kenneth Stein, senior vice-president and chief medical officer for rhythm management and global health policy at Boston Scientific, said: "The clinical significance of the updated guidelines provides a call to action for physicians to include the S-ICD System in shared decision-making with their ICD-indicated patients."
