British Orthodontic Society launches new app to aid IOTN classifications

The British Orthodontic Society has announced the launch of a new app to help dental professionals and students classify patients according to the Index of Treatment Need (IOTN).

Introduced at the 2016 British Orthodontic Conference, the Easy IOTN aims to improve the standard and accuracy of orthodontic referrals, as well as supporting and informing the training of undergraduates and foundation dentists.

Available as a free download for iOS devices, it uses simple clinical features to guide the user to the correct classification via the quickest possible route. Meanwhile, a continuing professional development (CPD) and training section provides one hour of verifiable CPD.

A separate version of the app for Android devices is also set to be made available in the new year.

Dr Guy Deeming, who led the development team for the British Orthodontic Society, said: "We wanted to simplify and streamline the scoring process, as well as support the training of dentists. This is no substitute for calibration, but we hope it will be a useful adjunct for dentists."

The launch of the app acknowledges IOTN as a potentially complex system that is often applied incorrectly. Currently, there is a growing emphasis on reducing referrals for patients who do not qualify for NHS treatment, making the release of the app ideally timed.
