British Orthodontic Society warns against use of DIY braces

The British Orthodontic Society has issued a warning against the use of DIY braces purchased through online providers.

Responding to a recent surge in the number of people opting to purchase these low-cost options online instead of undergoing clinical examination by a trained dentist, the organisation has cautioned that DIY treatments of this kind carry numerous risks.

It was noted, for example, that there is no regulation of these websites, which are usually run by non-dentists or businesses operating from abroad, meaning no protections are in place for patients should something go wrong.

Moreover, the number of orthodontic systems now on the market has resulted in confusion for patients looking for tooth-straightening, meaning many are making up their mind what they want before even seeing a clinician, regardless of whether that treatment is in their best interests.

As such, DIY braces offer them a way of cutting out dental consultations completely, meaning considerations such as bite and facial harmony are being entirely overlooked.

Richard George, director of external relations at the British Orthodontic Society, said: "Buying aligners online to straighten your teeth without a clinical examination and then embarking on unsupervised treatment is risky and could cause permanent damage."
