Bruker Expands Mass Spectrometry Reach with TOFWERK Acquisition

Millie Daines
Bruker Corporation has acquired the remaining 60% stake in TOFWERK AG, thereby gaining full control of the Swiss company renowned for its ultra-fast time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometry technology. This strategic move will bolster Bruker’s foothold in diverse small-molecule markets, including atmospheric research, food and fragrance testing, and semiconductor cleanroom monitoring, potentially reshaping the landscape of these applied fields.
Founded in 2002 and based in Thun, Switzerland, TOFWERK has established itself as a leader in compact and high-speed TOF mass spectrometers, achieving strong global sales with over 1,000 instruments deployed. Their proprietary technology is particularly well-suited for rapid, precise analysis required in industries like food safety and environmental monitoring. With a projected revenue of around $40 million by 2025 and a team of 130 employees, TOFWERK complements Bruker’s existing portfolio and expertise in mass spectrometry. The acquisition will allow Bruker to leverage TOFWERK’s pioneering technologies, such as the Vocus TOF-MS for air and cleanroom monitoring, extending its reach into burgeoning markets that demand innovative analytical solutions.
By fully integrating TOFWERK, Bruker is set to enhance its product offerings in applied mass spectrometry. This acquisition not only signifies a major strategic expansion for Bruker but also promises innovative advancements in critical application areas, further solidifying its leadership in scientific instrumentation.
