Burns Pet Nutrition founder donates some annual profits to charity

On the anniversary of his family-run company’s 25th year, veterinary surgeon John Burns, who founded Burns Pet Nutrition, is set to donate a quarter of the company’s annual profits to charity. £800,000 will go to the 11 year old charity Burns Pet Nutrition Foundation which focuses on the effects of social isolation in rural west Wales and seeks to improve the lives of both pets and people up and down the country. The remainder will be shared out between several other animal welfare charities such as Dogs for the Disabled, a pioneering charity established in 2007, based in Cork, Ireland, that trains specially selected dogs to carry out a range of practical tasks to assist disabled children and adults in order to achieve greater independence, and the Oxford based Forever Hounds Trust, dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of unwanted, abused or abandoned greyhounds and lurchers.
Dr Burns said: “As the sole shareholder of Burns Pet Nutrition, I am not beholden to investors seeking returns on their investments. I have decided the company should be a force for good channelled through the work of our community team and The Burns Pet Nutrition Foundation. The charitable activities are not intended to be a one-off, but designed to grow and develop in the years to come. Our local community and the people within it are as equally important to me as the staff and customers we work with. I want Burns to not only be known for our natural pet food, but also for establishing and maintaining a legacy of good causes in the community.”
