BVA Launches AI Toolkit to Tackle Client Self-Diagnosis
The British Veterinary Association (BVA) has launched an AI toolkit to help UK vets use AI tools safely and ethically in practice, and to manage the growing phenomenon of clients using AI to self-diagnose their pets before veterinary appointments. Announced on 26 October 2026, the member-exclusive toolkit addresses substantial AI policy gaps across UK veterinary practice and signals rising commercial opportunity across the veterinary AI governance, software and client education categories.
The BVA toolkit includes a downloadable policy template for practices, a printable waiting-room charter setting out commitments to responsible AI use, and video resources on handling conversations where a vet’s diagnosis or treatment plan differs from an AI tool’s suggestion. Supporting BVA Voice of the Veterinary Profession survey data shows almost half of vets reported no AI use policy at their workplace, around one in three were unsure whether their workplace had one, and vets estimated approximately one in seven clients use AI in caring for their animals. Approximately two-thirds of surveyed vets reported clients using AI to try to diagnose an animal’s health problem, with other uses including researching treatment options, checking vet information and deciding whether treatment was needed before booking an appointment.
The toolkit launch signals substantial commercial opportunity across the growing veterinary AI software category, where emerging players include SignalPET (radiology AI), Vetology AI (diagnostic imaging AI), PetDx (OncoK9), Mars Veterinary Health’s AI diagnostic investments, Zoetis (Vetscan Imagyst AI diagnostics) and IDEXX (SediVue Dx). Governance and practice management incumbents including ezyVet (IDEXX), Covetrus (Rapport), VetView and PracticePartner face increasing pressure to integrate AI governance features into their core offerings. The BVA toolkit also opens positioning space for pet owner-facing AI diagnostic apps including PawPrint, Petco Health and emerging veterinary telehealth platforms Vetster and Dutch.
The commercial signal is a maturing UK veterinary AI governance category where policy frameworks and client education tools are becoming essential practice infrastructure alongside clinical AI diagnostic adoption. Client AI usage patterns reshape the vet-client consultation dynamic. Expect Zoetis, IDEXX, SignalPET, Vetology AI, ezyVet, Covetrus and veterinary telehealth specialists to sharpen their UK veterinary AI positioning through 2027.
