BVA Raises Concerns About Issues the XL Bully Ban Could Bring

The government has been cautioned that it does not have a “clear understanding” of the effects that the proposed XL bully restriction will have on dogs and the animal health industry.

The British Veterinary Association wrote to the government after concerns were raised during the London Vet Show.

Dr Anna Judson, head of the BVA stressed, “It is simply not possible to make this assertion without a clear understanding of the number of dogs involved, nor without knowing how many of these are already neutered and how many will be presented for neutering or euthanasia.”

Although the expected value of dogs that could be impacted ranges from ten thousand to fifty thousand, the letter suggested that after a “precautionary approach” recommended by Defra itself is followed, the total amount could be significantly greater.

From the beginning of February, individuals who choose to own XL bully dogs after the implementation of the ban will need to ensure that their dogs are neutered.

However recent research showed that neutering may come with negative consequences to their health and wellbeing and concerns were raised over how the procedure should be performed.

Dr Judson is worried that “many dogs will be neutered before the recommended age of 18 months” and suggested to the government to allow more time for dogs to be neutered at an appropriate age.
