Calls for faster decision on drugs

MPs have called for a faster and more streamlined system for assessing NHS treatments in England, Northern Ireland and Wales.

A Commons committee stated that the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) should adopt a “rough and ready” approach similar to that which is currently in place in Scotland.

Regarding new drugs and technologies, the committee stated than an in-depth review could be carried out at a later date if one is needed.

Kevin Barron, health committee chairman, told the BBC: “We have concerns about how NICE does its job. No healthcare system can deliver everything … but more cost-effective treatment means more treatment.”

Chief executive of NICE Andrew Dillon said the institute would consider the report along with the government.

It is now down to ministers to consider the findings.

NICE was established in 1999 to provide guidance to the NHS regarding the type of treatments that should be made available by assessing their cost-effectiveness.
