Cancer Research UK allocates funding to budding scientists

A group of some of the UK's most promising oncology researchers have been allocated funding and support as part of a Cancer Research UK project.

Awards have been presented to seven talented young scientists as part of an 11 million pound scheme that aims to help them establish or develop their own independent cancer research groups.

Two of those selected will be able to do so using their Career Development Fellowships, while the remaining five will use their Senior Cancer Research Fellowships to build on and expand their existing work.

According to the research charity, investments of this kind are vital to achieving further breakthroughs in the fields of immunotherapy and personalised treatment over the coming years.

Professor Margaret Frame, director of the Edinburgh Cancer Research UK Centre and chair of the New Investigator Awards interview panel, said: "The quality of applications this year was exceptional and although it was extremely difficult to choose, we're confident that the individuals selected are truly outstanding."

Cancer Research UK supports the work of more than 4,000 researchers, doctors and nurses throughout Britain.
