CCDC Seeks to Inspire Generation of Structural Scientists

Researchers from across the world can access 1 million experimental small molecule crystal structures in the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre’s (CCDC’s) Structural Database.

While this sounds great, and the information presented there has a significant influence on developments in catalysts, batteries, and more, CCDC is worried that few people outside the profession have heard of it.

In a bid to increase awareness regarding the platform, grants are going to be given out by the CCDC to increase engagement and knowledge on the subject for the public and schools. They hope this will combat crystallography and structural science’s lack of exposure.

To pique young people’s interest in STEM fields and particular study areas, endowments can be used to create visual education aids such as movies and social media series. Although the main focus will be in schools, the grant candidates have to be 18 or above.

Head of Database and Community for the company, Suzanna Ward, expressed that “these grants will help others to share our love of structural science to a wider audience and will support our global community to be part of our mission to grow engagement in crystallography and inspire the next generation of structural scientists.”
