Celgene and Sage Bionetworks to develop app to monitor chronic anaemia

19th October 2016

Celgene has announced a new collaboration with Sage Bionetworks to support an observational study of patients living with chronic anaemia due to myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) or beta-thalassaemia.

The companies will work together to develop an iPhone app utilising the Apple ResearchKit framework to improve the understanding of the burden of disease for patients in this demographic.

Apps of this kind are increasingly being used in clinical studies to collect and analyse large volumes of patient-reported data, helping researchers to better capture and understand disease burden and improve therapeutic developments.

The diseases targeted by this new study are known to have a significant impact on quality of life among affected individuals, but it has been difficult to understand and quantify prior to this.

Michael Pehl, president for haematology and oncology at Celgene, said: "Through our collaboration with Sage Bionetworks and the evolving capability of smartphones and wearables as robust data collection devices, we believe we will be able to provide important new insights for patients with MDS and beta-thalassaemia."

Celgene is currently developing three assets – CC-486, luspatercept, and enasidenib – to treat patients affected by these conditions.
