Celgene announces departure of chief operating officer

3rd April 2018

Celgene has announced that its president and chief operating officer Scott Smith has left the company with immediate effect.

Mr Smith has occupied this role since April 2017, having joined Celgene in 2008. During this time, he has held several senior positions, including key roles within its inflammation and immunology division.

Following his departure, his primary responsibilities will be assumed by chairman and chief executive officer Mark Alles, who will take over responsibility for strategic leadership of Celgene's global haematology and oncology franchise, its inflammation and immunology unit, and the firm's manufacturing, regulatory and clinical development functions.

This comes as part of a broader series of changes to the company's executive team structure to enhance its leadership focus and ensure Celgene is best equipped for continued long-term success.

Mr Alles said: "Scott has made significant contributions to Celgene, most notably building our inflammation and immunology franchise, including the global launch of Otezla."
