Celgene receives EU approval for pancreatic cancer drug Abraxane

Celgene has announced that the European Commission has approved its drug Abraxane for use as part of a new combination treatment for metastatic pancreatic cancer.

The regulator has ratified the drug for use in combination with gemcitabine for the first-line treatment of adult patients with metastatic adenocarcinoma of the pancreas. It is the first new treatment for this condition approved in Europe in nearly seven years.

Clinical study data shows the significant survival benefits associated with the therapy approach. It could be an important new option for treating a disease that is traditionally associated with low survival rates.

Since 1990, more than 30 phase III trials have failed to lead to EU regulatory approval in this indication.

Dr Alan Colowick, president of Celgene in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said: "Today's announcement is a significant step forward, but it is by no means the end for Celgene. We remain committed to developing innovative treatments to improve the lives of those with this devastating disease."

Last month, the firm underlined its commitment to cancer drug research by entering into a new collaborative agreement with OncoMed.
