Cell therapy trials for cardiovascular disease open

Phase one clinical trials to develop cell therapy for treatment of cardiovascular disease have opened at Emory University School of Medicine, it was announced today.

The potential products will be developed by Amorcyte, a privately funded cell therapy company specialising in treatments of cardiovascular disease.

Development strategies for the trials are based on expert advice and previous investigations into cell therapy.

Products under trial include AMR-001, which will be tested to determine the safety and potential biological activity of the drugs.

The researchers are conducting enrolments for the trial this month and are actively recruiting patients for the trial.

Dr Arshed Quyyumi of Emory University, said: “In addition to safety, this trial will assess the effect of stem cell dose on definitive clinical endpoints following administration after myocardial infarction.”

According to the World Health Organisation cardiovascular disease is on the increase worldwide – therapies produced by Amorcyte are intended for widespread clinical use.
