Cephalon announces publication of TREANDA study

Cephalon has announced the publication of data from a phase III study which showed that TREANDA (bendamustine HCl) for injection enhanced outcomes in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) when compared to chlorambucil.

The open-label, randomised, multi-centre trial information appears in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

Participants in the study were given TREANDA (100 mg per sq m on days one and two) (n=162) or chlorambucil (0.8 mg/kg on days one and 15) (n=157) for up to six treatment cycles.

It was found that TREANDA demonstrated significantly better outcomes for the primary endpoints of overall response rates and progression-free survival in comparison to chlorambucil.

Professor Wolfgang Knauf, lead investigator of the study, said: “Treatment options are limited for those with advanced CLL, but this study shows that bendamustine demonstrates significantly better efficacy compared to chlorambucil with a tolerable safety profile.”

In recent days, the firm announced the appointment of Craig Phillips as vice-president and general manager of the Oncology Business Unit.
