Change Needed to Make Virtual Wards a Sustainable Future Option

At the end of summer, the NHS presented its plan to open 25,000 virtual beds by 2023.

Unfortunately, virtual beds don’t offer the same patient care as in hospitals, often only involving monitoring conditions from home. Although this opens up hospital beds for other patients, the results may not reflect what they could be.

Upgraded and innovative technology is imperative to being able to both monitor and extend the potential of remote care. The specific requirements of virtual wards cannot currently be met by the facilities available, which includes electronic task lists and care coordination capabilities.

Virtual wards must produce data of an equal calibre to that recorded in hospitals in order to save crucial clinical time and provide care up to standard.

To help make sure that patients are comfortable reaching out to clinical teams if they are in need, engagement devices are fundamental to creating a pleasant individual experience.

The transition from reactive to proactive patient health management means focusing on identifying declining states and treating patients before hospital admission, rather than after their release.

Scalable community workforce models are also essential to making the process sustainable for those who can’t take their own medicine. Having a diverse group of workers allows the models to function efficiently without increasing the amount of work for doctors and nurses.

In order to enable safer and more efficient clinical decision-making, automated processes can make it simple to spot anomalies and variances in data from devices that track patient information from their home.
