CMR Surgical develop Versius

CMR Surgical developed a surgical robot, Versius, which performed minimal access surgery (MAS) to treat patients with bowel cancer or serious bowel disease in both Milton Keynes and Edinburgh NHS facilities.

The robot, equipped with multiple arms, has been designed to improve keyhole procedures as well as MAS performance and can be operated by a surgeon, thus relieving long procedures and allowing accurate operation. The robot is also very compact and thus has the ability to open MAS to a wider range of patients.

NHS Lothian’s Medical Director, Dr Tracey Gillies, stated: “We are delighted to be creating history and to be at the very forefront of medical science. Our team at the Western General Hospital are the first in Europe and among only a handful in the world to pioneer this new type of robotic surgery. This is a really exciting development and is a credit to the team who are determined to push boundaries to provide the best patient care possible.”
