Coloplast to launch innovative wound dressing

Coloplast, the medical devices and associated services firm, has revealed that it will launch a wound dressing with built-in pain medication on Friday.

The company will make what it is calling the “world’s first” such wound dressing, which releases ibuprofen, available to the UK market on Friday March 30th.

Biatain – Ibu as the product is known, was developed by a Danish engineer working for Coloplast. It can also be used to reduce pain for people with chronic wounds, such as leg ulcers and pressure sores.

“The traditional tablets that patients take for pain simply don’t help,” said Christine Moffatt, professor of nursing at Thames Valley University and director of the Centre for Research and Implementation of Clinical Practice.

“It seems that this particular product is able to apply the actual pain-relieving agent to the area of the wound. It gets to the source of where the pain is and switches it off in the wound itself and this seems to be very beneficial.”

Targeted at moist wound healing, the product showed positive results in tests on 122 patients published earlier this month in the International Wound Journal. Biatain – Ibu will be available in three sizes.

Elsewhere, the firm is currently involved in attempting to raise money for Sue Ryder Care Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough, according to the Peterborough Evening Telegraph.
